How to use this while reading

Before a shlok, glance at the speaker column only. Read the shlok in the source. Then check the gist. That order matters — reading the gist first turns the reading into recognition, which feels like understanding but does not last.

1	Shaunak	Grants the ground: you have taught us many means — dharma, jnan, vairagya, yoga and the rest.
2	Shaunak	And taught them well — made plain with many itihas, heard by the whole assembly, fruits included.
3	Shaunak	The complaint. Too hard for all people; and with obstacles so many, even success is out of reach.
4	Shaunak	Concedes the exceptions: the steadfast great ones did succeed — but only with enormous effort, over enormous time.
5	Shaunak	The request. An easy means — for every varna and ashram, and for women and shudras too.
6	Shaunak	Adds the spec: little done, by anyone, unobstructed — and yet a great fruit.
7	Shaunak	Asks him to consider it carefully and speak out of compassion, for the good of all jivas.
8	Shaunak	Closes off the modest refusal: by the grace of Baldev, Vyas and your father, you know every shastra's conclusion.

The nesting begins. Savarni asked exactly this of Skanda, son of Shankar — humbly, and after hearing the jnan-kand.

Long ago — Savarni asks Kartik Swami

10	Savarni	Same ground as Shaunak: I have heard the many dharmas, sankhya-jnan, yoga and the rest from you.
11	Savarni	Same complaint, sharper: hard for people like me — and even the great ones manage only with pain, over long time.
12	Savarni	Same request, with one addition: easy for all, and the highest of all — શ્રેષ્ઠતમ. Not a lesser path for weaker people.
13	Sauti	Stage direction: Kartik Swami meditates on Vasudev in his heart, then speaks. The commentary says the question cannot be answered without the Lord's pleasure.

The first answer — and why it is not enough

14	Kartik Swami	Names his source: what he heard from his father Mahadev. Promises an easy means, for all beings.
15	Kartik Swami	The first answer. Nothing equals pleasing the devata for one who wants his aim fulfilled.
16	Kartik Swami	The mechanism: a small good act, done in connection with the deity, gives a great fruit and meets no obstruction.
17	Kartik Swami	Applies it across the board — daiva (agnihotra), pitrya (shraddh), svadharma, kamya karma — all become immediately fruitful.
18	Kartik Swami	And the hard ones too: sankhya, yog, vairagya become easy, and quick to bear fruit, by this same connection.
19	Kartik Swami	The instruction: so let everyone worship, according to capacity, with love — પ્રીતિથી.
20	Savarni	The objection opens. You told me of many deities — Vasu, Rudra, Aditya and the rest — and many ways of worshipping them.
21	Savarni	And of their fruits, one by one, chiefly svarga. Those fruits are કાળગ્રસ્ત — swallowed by time.
22	Savarni	Even the yogis of the renouncing path, worshipping Brahma and the rest, reach Jan, Tap, Satya lok — which end with the dviparardh.
23	Savarni	The argument in one line: if the fruit perishes anyway, what is the point of the effort? Only wasted labour.
24	Savarni	And the refusal: worship of deities whose body, place and power time destroys does not appeal to me.
25	Savarni	Question one, part A. Then tell me the God who is himself beyond fear and removes the fear of those who take refuge; sanatan; eternal in his dham; giver of imperishable fruit; tender to his devotees.
26	Savarni	Question one, part B. By whose grace everyone's every desire is fulfilled easily and swiftly — here, in this life. Tell me that God, Guha.
27	Savarni	Question two. And tell me fully his way of worship — easy, and accepted by the wise. I want to know both, as they truly are.
28	Sauti	Kartik Swami, very pleased, honours the sage and begins to speak. The chapter ends here, mid-breath.

The closing line

इति श्रीस्कन्दपुराणे विष्णुखण्डे श्रीवासुदेवमाहात्म्ये सावर्णिप्रश्नो नाम प्रथमोऽध्यायः ।।१।।
